This year Oregon has a real opportunity to extend healthcare coverage for all children and end needless suffering. The Cover All Kids Coalition includes Up to 90+ organizations from the health industry to labor unions, community based organizations and educators that have endorsed and committed to ensure that all children has access to the care that they need.
Health insurance coverage is one of the single most effective ways to ensure that children receive the preventive health and medical care they need to thrive in school and life. In Oregon, 2 percent of children do not have any medical coverage.
SB 558 and HB 2726 extends the Oregon Health Plan to all children residing in Oregon up to 300 percent of the FPL and ensures outreach for the program to newly eligible children to maximize enrollment. By covering all kids in Oregon, we will ensure that every child is on the pathway to success.
Oregon needs to take the next step and extend health care coverage to all children.
On day one of school, we need to ensure children arrive prepared and ready to learn.
· Insured kids are 9.7% less likely to drop out of high school
· Insured kids are 5.5% more likely to graduate from college
Medicaid-eligible children have higher incomes later in life and were more likely to surpass their families’ economic status as adults.
· Higher Incomes and Wealth
· Higher Tax Contributions and More Weeks Worked
· Higher Income Growth Rate
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Children with Access to Medicaid Showed:
· More than 50% Decline in Asthma Treatments in the ER
· 26% Decline in High Blood Pressure as Adults
· Fewer ER Visits and Hospitalizations as Adults.
Having health insurance promotes health, while preventing needless suffering, economic hardship and even death for some children. No child deserves to suffer. Six other states, (Washington, California, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, and Washington D.C.), are a testament to the fact that health insurance coverage is a key to ensuring that every child succeeds. Oregon can and should ensure that every child is on a pathway to success.
Cover All Kids Is Good for Oregon’s Future. Cover All Kids is the Right Thing to Do.
